If I like a design but just want to make minor changes to it, am I able to communicate directly with the designer themself?

Yes. Just as they are sitting in front of you. They work with you with whatever you need

Yes, and they recommend it. We told several designers we didn't want a normal corporate logo and eliminated them and their designs. Some modified their artwork with what we liked and didn't like. Quality varies from the designers, but some are very good.

Yes, for sure. I asked my designer for many many changes over the course of several days. They don't get paid until you're happy. But be reasonable:-)

Yes, you may ask for multiple revisions in the font, shape, size, and color. The client can ask for revision both during the contest period when design submission is allowed and also ask for minor/final changes during the design Handover stage. You can directly communicate with the designer in both stages.
